Indoor Meetings Half-Day and Full-Day Excursions May Weekends
Indoor Meetings - November to April Every Year
Indoor Meetings are held on the first Saturday of every month from November to April at 3.00pm at Milton Hall (the Darby and Joan Club) in Cooper's Crescent, Carshalton. Cooper's Crescent is off Nightingale Rd and not far from Carshalton Station.
Lectures of local or general interest are given at all indoor meetings except the one in March - when the Annual General Meeting is held and slides are shown of pictures taken on visits during the preceding year. All meetings are followed by tea and cakes - which are provided free to members.
Previous recent lectures have been on Merton Priory (David Saxby), the Portable Antiquities Scheme (David Williams), Bhutan Land of the Thunder Dragon (Beryl Palmier), The Changing Face of London from the Air (Tom Samson) and British Heritage Railways (Paul Whittle).
Half-Day and Full-Day Excursions
During the summer there are normally at least 5 excursions on a half or full day basis to places of historical interest. Local" excursions for 2009 will be put on the web as soon as available, meanwhile see particulars for the May weekend.
If paying a reduced fee please ensure you take your English Heritage or National Trust membership card or evidence of eligibility for reduced admission fees with you to show staff at the locations visited.

Wednesday 16th June 2010 ~ Dover Castle
Dover Castle is mainly a medieval castle with a Henry II tower - recently renovated to represent 12th century colourful interior.
There are also the Secret WWII tunnels and hospital. Previous booking is required to visit this section. You can see the balcony where the officer commanding the withdrawal from Dunkirk stood to watch all the boats returning.
There is of course the Roman lighthouse on the top of the hill together with the old Church.
Wednesday 14th July 2010 ~ Boughton Monchelsea Place, Maidstone
This is Grade 1 manor house was built in 1560, with a historic deer park and spectacular views over the Wealden Downs. There are Tudor Barns and a walled garden There will be guided tours of the house and medieval church of St Peter.
There is no restaurant so participants are advised to take a packed meal. Tea and biscuits will be provided.
Tuesday 10th August 2010 ~ Westenhanger Castle (Alternative Tour)

Westenhanger Castle near Hythe was built in approximately 12th century, having originally been a manor in the possession of King Canute. It has been owned by both Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I. There is a curtain wall, a dovecote with 420 nesting places, a remarkable mediaeval barn with stone exterior and a hammer beam timber roof. The interior was recently restored by English Heritage. This barn has 4 wagon porches and a tributary of the East Stour river running through it.
The tour of the exterior takes about ninety minutes, so there is a lot to see.
May Week-End Excursions (Further Afield)
Every year in May a weekend is arranged so that we can visit places further afield that would be inaccessible on a day excursion.
8-10 May
2010 ~ Leamington Spa (Base), Kenilworth Castle,
This will be based in Leamington Spa. Visits will include Kenilworth Castle, where English Heritage has recently reopened the garden, after a multimillion pound refurbishment to recreate the garden laid out by Robert Dudley to impress Queen Elizabeth the First. Visits will also be made to Warwick Castle and Compton Verney, a Robert Adam Mansion in a 120-acre Capability Brown landscape.
