Claydon, Buckinghamshire

Led by Alex and Beryl Palmier

The house is owned by the National Trust but the Gardens are still the responsibility of the Verney Family – so there is a charge to us as a group of £3.50 per person for the garden (the park is free).

We shall be having a talk on Florence Nightingale in November, so we thought it would be of interest to visit Calydon where she had a suite of rooms on the first floor as Sir Harry Verney was her brother-in -law.

In 1750 Sir Ralph Verney set out to create a family seat of extraordinary grandeur and the interiors are among the most lavish of the 18th century. There are 21 hectares of parkland and lakes as well as the private and kitchen gardens.

In the courtyard there is a restaurant and tearoom, also Craft galleries, and second bookshop.

Admission to the house is free to NT members, and £6.50 for others.

Cost of coach £15.50 for members and £16.50 for guests.

Set off from Ruskin Park at 10.30 pm. Arrive approx 12 noon. The park and tearoom will be open but the house does not open till 1.00 pm. There will be a free introductory talk at 1.00 pm.

Depart Claydon 5.00 pm arrive Ruskin Park approx 6.30 pm.

Bateman's East Sussex led by Ann Darrington.

Owned by the National Trust, Bateman's is Sussex sandstone manor house, built in 1634 for a local Ironmaster. It was also the home of Rudyard Kipling from 1902 to 1936.

We will see rooms as they were in Kipling's day including the study where the view inspired him to write some of his well- loved works such as Puck of Pook's Hill. There are also mementos of his time in India and illustrations from the Jungle Book.

The River Dudwell runs through the delightful garden and there is a mill with one of the world's first water driven turbines, installed by Kipling. In the garage is a 1928 Rolls Royce – one of several owned by him as he was a keen motorist.

There is also a licensed tearoom with accent on local produce.
